Gods of Sun and Sacrifice

The Aztec pantheon embodies the endless cycle of creation and destruction, where gods demand sacrifice to maintain the cosmos. Their complex calendar and prophecies guided every aspect of life in ancient Mesoamerica.

Before our world, there were four other Suns, each ending in catastrophe. The first Sun was devoured by jaguars, the second swept away by wind, the third destroyed by fiery rain, and the fourth drowned in a great flood.

Our world, the Fifth Sun, was created when the god Nanahuatzin sacrificed himself by leaping into a divine fire, becoming the sun Tonatiuh. The warrior god Tecuciztecatl followed, becoming the moon.

To keep the Fifth Sun in motion, the gods gathered at Teotihuacan and offered their own blood. This great sacrifice established the covenant between gods and humans: the gods sustain humanity, and humans sustain the gods through ritual offerings.

This Fifth Sun is destined to end in earthquakes, and the warrior souls who died in battle will descend to assist Tonatiuh in the final cosmic struggle.
