Sacred Gods of Ancient Egypt
One of the world's oldest religious traditions, the Egyptian pantheon spans over three millennia of continuous development. These deities embodied the forces of nature, human virtues, and the eternal cycle of life and death along the Nile.
In the beginning, there was only Nun, the primordial waters of chaos. From these waters rose a mound upon which stood Ra, the first god, who emerged from a lotus flower.
Ra created the air god Shu and his sister Tefnut, goddess of moisture. From them came Geb, the earth, and Nut, the sky, who were locked in an eternal embrace.
Shu separated Geb and Nut, creating space between the earth and sky. From their union came four children: Osiris, Isis, Set, and Nephthys.
Osiris became the first king of Egypt, bringing civilization and agriculture. His murder by Set and resurrection by Isis became the foundation of Egyptian beliefs about death and rebirth.
