Zulu traditional religion centers around Unkulunkulu, the Supreme Creator, with a strong emphasis on ancestor veneration and the spiritual role of ancestors as intermediaries. The belief system integrates the natural and spiritual worlds through powerful rituals and communal practices.
Unkulunkulu emerged from the primordial reeds in Uhlanga, the original source of all being. He was the first being and broke off from the reeds.
After creating himself, Unkulunkulu created all things: mountains, streams, plants, animals, and the first humans who emerged from the reeds like him.
He taught the first humans how to hunt, make fire, cultivate food, and establish social orders. He gave them the first seeds and cattle.
Finally, Unkulunkulu established the system of ancestor veneration, connecting the living with the dead through dreams and visions.
