Visionaries who established enduring institutions
The leader of the Branch Davidians, a splinter group of the Seventh-day Adventist Church that believed the apocalypse was imminent. He legally changed his name to reflect his claim as a messianic figure from the line of King David and King Cyrus. He claimed the exclusive right to interpret the "Seven Seals" of the Book of Revelation, preparing his followers for a final confrontation with the "Babylonian" government. This tension culminated in the 51-day Waco siege in 1993, which ended in a tragic fire and the deaths of 76 people. He was a talented musician who often used rock music as a medium for his lengthy, intense biblical prophecies.
