Visionaries who established enduring institutions
An Indian mystic and spiritual teacher who advocated for a synthesis of Western materialism and Eastern spirituality. He gained global notoriety for his "Dynamic Meditation" and his controversial commune in Oregon, Rajneeshpuram, which featured a fleet of 93 Rolls-Royces. He was a fierce critic of institutionalized religion and social orthodoxies, famously saying, "Zorba the Buddha" should be the ideal human—one who enjoys both the physical world and silent meditation. His teachings emphasize the importance of awareness, humor, and celebration as the keys to enlightenment. Despite his death in 1990, his books and meditations continue to be widely popular among global "spiritual but not religious" seekers.
