Rainbow Serpent

She is the arch of the sky and the curve of the waterhole, a massive, shimmering weight that pushed the mountains upward as she slid across the young earth. Every color of the opal is hidden in her scales, but her belly is full of the law and the life-giving rains that she guards with a fierce, motherly hunger. Can we see the path of the spirit in the curve of the creek, or have we forgotten that the land itself is a living skin? She is the ancestor of ancestors, the one who dreamt the world into being and still breathes in the deep, dark pools.
