Visionaries who established enduring institutions
A self-proclaimed "King of Jerusalem" and a charismatic pretender who led a brief but violent uprising in Kent. He claimed to be a divine figure sent to champion the rights of the poor against the New Poor Law of 1834. He attracted followers with his messianic rhetoric and flamboyant style, eventually leading to the Battle of Bossenden Wood in 1838. This skirmish is often cited as the last battle fought on English soil, ending in his death and the dispersal of his cult. His legacy remains a bizarre chapter in the history of British social radicalism and religious delusion.
