Did we create God in our image, or did we simply outsource our best qualities to a celestial bank we can never withdraw from? He argued that "theology is anthropology," suggesting that everything we praise in a deity—love, wisdom, justice—is actually a projection of our own human potential. "Man is what he eats," he famously noted, emphasizing that our spiritual hunger is actually a physical and social one. He sought to bring the divine back down to earth, turning the gaze of humanity away from the clouds and toward our neighbors. For him, the "holy" is simply the highest form of human connection. Why worship a ghost when you can love a human?
