Edmund Hillary

Standing atop the world at 8,848 meters, Edmund Hillary, alongside Tenzing Norgay, achieved the first confirmed ascent of Mount Everest in 1953. This New Zealand mountaineer turned a feat of physical endurance into a global symbol of the "can-do" spirit of the post-war era. Beyond the peaks, he dedicated much of his life to building schools and hospitals for the Sherpa people through the Himalayan Trust. He also reached both the North and South Poles, becoming one of the first humans to complete the "Triple Pole" challenge. His humility and commitment to the mountains made him a hero far beyond the climbing community.
