Born fully armored from a ball of feathers, he began his existence by decapitating his own sister—a bloody omen of the centuries of conquest to follow. He is the Blue Hummingbird of the Left, a solar titan who requires the "precious water" of human hearts just to find the strength to cross the sky. "Is the sun worth the blade?" the priest asks as the obsidian rises. He is the patron of the Jaguar and Eagle warriors, a deity who views peace as a dangerous stagnation that leads to cosmic extinction. To the residents of Tenochtitlan, he was a protective father whose embrace was made of flint and fire. He teaches that the universe is a war, and only the most ruthless sacrifices keep the night at bay.
