Explorers who expanded the known world
Searching for the source of the Nile, David Livingstone became one of the most famous European explorers of the African interior in the 19th century. He was a missionary and physician who obsessed over ending the East African slave trade through what he called "Civilization, Christianity, and Commerce." He was the first European to see Mosi-oa-Tunya, which he renamed Victoria Falls, and his disappearance sparked the famous "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?" search by Henry Morton Stanley. His travels mapped vast regions of the continent and deeply influenced the British perception of Africa. He died in Zambia, where his heart was buried by his loyal companions.
